Antigone and Radical Christianity

“I have come to set the world on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing” (Lk 12:49). Does that sound a bit radical to you? Well, it simply is. This is a quote from the very founder of Christianity, Jesus Christ.

Christianity is inherently radical, but not in one overused sense of the term. Being radical isn’t about suicide bombings. What is truly radical is being a true Christian, one who is not afraid of being faithful to God, even to the point of death. It should bring the light and life to others, not destruction.

The Ache

Light diffuses itself gently on high, cream-colored, plastered walls and the worn, wooden floor from somewhere up above, filling the gallery with clarity. The hushed sounds of gentle footsteps on hardwood and the murmur of conversation somewhere in a distant atrium are an audible backdrop to the silence in the gallery where I’m standing contrapposto opposite a masterpiece. Everything else in the room recedes into a fuzzy blur round the circular frame before me. The trio of figures on the canvas seems to exist in an eternity of their own, which has just opened to admit a lone visitor. In that quiet hall something about Rafael’s creation, the Alba Madonna, captivates me, playing my soul like a cello in the hands of Pablo Casals. Gazing on the serenity of those faces and forms—the silent exchange between Mary and Jesus and John the Baptist, the motionless yet meaningful composition—is an experience of beauty.

I will always hold the greatest esteem and gratitude in my heart for the inventor of the nightlight.  Maybe not everyone can understand the feeling, but then again, not every five-year-old kid has had an upstairs bedroom all to himself.  I had my own room on the second floor.   That left me with a tough assignment.  Each night at bedtime I had to run up a dark staircase in order to make it safely to my room without being caught by whatever monster or boogeyman that surely waited to attack me.  Once I got into my room, safety.  My nightlight was on.

More Beautiful

Advertisements love the before-and-after approach: “Here’s what Dave looked like before he used the Medifast weight loss program. Just take a look at him now!” “Compare this handsome lad with who he was before he used Clearasil acne cream. He’s a whole new person.” The final product looks so much better when you see how far it had to come.

I attended the Legion of Christ’s apostolic school starting at age 13 in 2003, so I have been around the Legion even long before joining. She is still the same Legion I wake up to every morning now, but at the same time she’s different. She’s much more beautiful, and it’s all the more evident, because the makeover happened so fast. The before and after stares you in the face.

What I Learned in the Laundry

Growing up, I never bothered to understand the laundry process. I put my dirty clothes to wash, and they came back clean. Simple enough, right? Doesn’t Mom use magic?

Years later, while working on the laundry team at our Cheshire novitiate, it finally dawned on me. Clothes aren’t cleaned by magic. A lot of hard work goes into it, and you’ve got to do it with love. Without love, I don’t think anyone could put up with laundry.
